THE BEST CUSTARD ROLLS RECIPE ; Custard Rose Rolls

This Custard Rolls Recipe will help you make the softest and most beautiful custard rolls with the least effort.

In this custard bread rolls recipe we use the One Rise Method of proofing and so we can make them faster than regular bread rolls.

The Custard Rose Rolls are squishy soft and they are filled with vanilla flavored custard cream.

These buns are soft and slightly sweet, and this bread recipe is actually adapted from our Easy No Knead Bread Rolls Recipe.

This bread rolls recipe so versatile and easy to make that we need to use only a few basic ingredients and the resulting rolls are super soft and fluffy.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR MAKING SOFT CUSTARD ROLLS

For the Bread Dough

  • Flour: 357 g or 2 3/4 cup(loosely packed)
  • Warm water: 210 ml or 1 cup-2 tbsp
  • Instant yeast: 1 tsp(Active dry yeast 1 and 1/4 tsp)
  • Salt : 1 tsp or 5.6 g
  • Butter: 42.6 g or 3 tbsp
  • Sugar or honey :32 g or 2 1/2 tbsp or more according to your preference

For the Custard

  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • Sugar :50 g or 1/4 cup
  • Corn Starch :15 g or 2 tbsp
  • Vanilla Extract :1 tsp
  • Milk :240 ml or 1 cup
  • A pinch of salt

HOW TO MAKE CUSTARD BREAD ROLLS

To make the custard bread rolls, we need to make the custard filling and the bread dough.

It is so easy to make the custard for filling the rose rolls.

In to a saucepan, add around 1/4 of a cup of milk.

Then add in the egg yolk, sugar, corn starch and a pinch of salt.

Whisk and mix them all together to form a homogenous mixture.

Then add the rest 3/4 cup of the milk into this.

Place the saucepan over low to medium heat.

Whisk it constantly until thickened.

When it gets thickened, turn off the heat and whisk in vanilla.

I stirred it every three minutes interval until its cooled ,so that the mixture remain smooth.

When it is almost near to room temperature, transfer custard into a small bowl.

Let it cool down completely.

I covered the bowl and placed it in refrigerator.

HOW LONG WILL THE COOKED CUSTARD STAY GOOD IN REFRIGERATOR

If kept in the refrigerator the custard will last for 3-4 days.

We can make this Custard Rolls in 4 simple steps

1.PREPARE THE CUSTARD ROLL DOUGH

Into a bowl,lets add all our ingredients together and mix them to form a shaggy mass of dough.

Add the water,sugar,yeast,salt ,butter and flour and mix them together.

Transfer the dough onto a clean work surface .Knead the dough until the dough become soft and elastic.

Only a well kneaded dough can produce soft and fluffy custard buns .

How should I know my dough is kneaded well?

We can test the doneness of dinner roll dough.

If properly kneaded, the dough should stretch, without tearing or breaking, into a thin membrane that you can see through.

If we are using bread flour it is easy to attain this stage of dough (it may take around 10 minutes of kneading).As bread dough contains more proteins than all purpose flour.

But if we are using all purpose flour,it may take longer to attain this stage of perfection.

Our bread would still be good and soft even if our dough didn’t pass this window pane test.

But if the dough passes the window pane test ,and the one hour proofing,then it is guaranteed that your bread will be super soft and fluffy.

It will be so much easier if you are using a stand mixer to prepare the dough.In a stand mixer,just knead the dough for 8-10 minutes using the dough hook attachment.

2.DIVIDE AND SHAPE THE DOUGH

Once our bread roll dough is ready, divide the dough into 12 equal pieces.For more precision,I weighed each of them and they were 53-54 g in weight.

Roll each piece of dough into small balls.Tuck in the edges towards the centre and roll the balls into small round balls.

Now take the rolls in the order that we rolled them.

You can start shaping the Roses.

Dust the surface with enough flour so that it will not stick to the rolling pin or on to the work surface.

Roll out each ball to about 4-4.2″ or 10-11 cm diameter.

Brush off any excess flour (it will be difficult for us to seal or the dough to stick together when there is flour)

Make slit (about 2 cm)on all four sides of the circular dough using a pizza cutter or a bench scraper or knife.Leave the center of the circle as it is.

Add your custard filling in the center.

Take one of the four sections and cover one side of the custard filling with it.

Now take the section that is opposite to it and cover the other side of the filling with it.Repeat the same with the last two parts.

Pinch the dough to seal it.

Place the prepared roll on to a baking tray.

If the baking tray is not non sticky ,grease it with butter and line it with a parchment paper.

Repeat until all our custard rose rolls are ready.

Cover the tray with cling film so that it will not get dry.

3.PROOF THE CUSTARD BREAD ROLLS

Let the rose shaped custard filled dough balls sit in a warm environment for about 60 minutes or until they puff up and get doubled in size.

After an hour,brush the top of those rolls with an egg wash.

This will help to make our rolls shiny and golden brown in colour when they are baked.

To make the egg wash,lightly beat one egg.

Now they are ready to to go into the oven.

4. BAKE THE CUSTARD BREAD ROLLS

Bake the Rose Rolls in a 350 F or 180 C preheated oven for 22-24 minutes.

Apply butter on top while they are still warm.

This will help to make the crust even softer.

The top of our custard rose rolls may get browned too fast.

How to prevent the top of custard buns from over browning ?

  1. Place an aluminum foil on top to prevent over browning,whenever you feel so
  2. You can place the baking tray away from the heating coils to prevent this issue..(I placed my baking tray in the lowest rack of the oven as the heating coils in my oven were on the topside)

If the dinner rolls are under baked, the inside will be doughy and they smell yeasty.So bake sufficiently for 22-24 minutes.

HOW TO STORE QUICK DINNER ROLLS?

Once the rolls are completely cooled,place the custard cream rolls in an airtight container and store at room temperature.

These custard cream buns will stay fresh for 2 days when stored at room temperature.I didn’t get a chance to test if it will remain good for more days.

In extremely warm, humid temperatures,the custard rolls should be frozen for longer-term storage.

For freezing: Place the buns in a heavy-duty freezer bag or wrap the buns tightly with aluminum foil or plastic freezer wrap and freeze.

Properly stored, they will maintain best quality for about 1 month.

HOW TO REHEAT QUICK DINNER ROLLS

Thaw the custard rolls and then brush/spray some water on the dinner rolls and place them into a 350 F preheated oven for 5 minutes.

The custard rolls will be soft and fresh and they smells too good.
