Hummus Recipe

What is Hummus

Hummus is essentially a Middle Eastern dip or spread that’s made by blending cooked chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), lemon juice, garlic and salt. It’s served with extra virgin olive oil and traditionally eaten with Arabic bread/Pita bread.

It is a very healthy snack that you can eat as a dip with crunchy vegetables or as a spread in your favorite wrap or add to sandwiches or salads.

Hummus meaning

The word “Hummus” comes from the Arabic word meaning “chickpeas”, and the full name of the prepared spread in Arabic is ḥummuṣ bi ṭaḥīna which means “chickpeas with tahini”.

Hummus Ingredients

Hummus is made with only a few basic ingredients

Hummus recipe
  • Chickpeas or garbanzo beans are the base for hummus. The softened beans breakdown into a smooth paste.

Even though we can use canned or home-cooked chickpeas in this hummus recipe,I do recommend you to make hummus from dried chickpeas, not only because they tastes better but also, there is a big difference in the daily required amount of Folate/Vitamin B9 in canned chickpeas and the one cooked right from the dried chickpeas(a difference of 120mcg for every cup)

  • Tahini  is a paste made from ground sesame seeds and it makes the hummus, taste incredible.

Making Hummus without Tahini:If you don’t like to add Tahini, just leave it out. You can still make delicious hummus.A chickpea puree without it is still quite delicious.Just add more olive oil, when you make it.

  • Lemon juice :Use fresh lemon juice to get the fresh and bright taste to our hummus.
  • Fresh Garlic adds a little spice and zest. You can use roasted garlic as well.
  • Cumin powder and Salt to add that comforting spicy aroma and to get the right balance of tanginess
  • Olive oil makes the texture of hummus luxurious
  • Cold water
