If you love the technique of quick breads, you will love these Quick and Easy Cinnamon Rolls and Soft Homemade dinner rolls recipe.

We can make this heart rolls, in five simple steps

  1. Prepare the dough
  2. Divide the dough
  3. Shape the rolls
  4. Proof the shaped rolls
  5. Bake the heart rolls

1.PREPARE THE BREAD DOUGH

To make this heart dinner rolls, we need to start by preparing our bread dough.

Into a bowl, add in the warm milk (not hot; preferably around 110F),sugar, salt, yeast, butter and the flour.

Combine everything together to form a shaggy mass of dough.

Transfer the dough on to a clean work surface.

Knead the dough for 10-12 minutes or until you get a smooth, soft, elastic dough which will not stick to your hands.

The dough will be sticky to handle in the beginning and we may get tempted to add more flour into this. But don’t do that, it will all come together in about 5-6 minutes of kneading.

If you are using a stand mixer, then it will be so easy for you to knead the dough.Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes with the dough hook attached.

The softer the dough ,the softer our bread will be.

If you are using ingredients by measuring using a weighing scale then you will not be needed to add any extra flour or water/milk in this recipe. But if you are following cup measurements, then the consistency of the dough may vary.In that case ,if you find your dough to be too sticky even after kneading for 5-6 minutes you can add more flour (tablespoon of flour at a time) or if you find the dough to be too tough, then you can add more milk/water into the dough(1 tsp at a time).

While making a bread, we dont need to be very precise on the measurements..,but we should know the consistency of the final dough. The final dough should be soft, smooth, elastic and not sticking to your hands. The more hydrates softer dough will produce softer fluffier bread.

So our bread dough will measure around 505 g in weight.

2.DIVIDE THE DOUGH

Divide the dough into 2 parts,350g and 150 g each and shape it into smooth round balls.

Take the small dough ball and add 1 tsp of cocoa powder and blend to gather until we get a smooth and even chocolate dough.

Now we have one chocolate and one white dough.

We need to divide the dough into 10 equal parts.

You can eyeball it or use a weighing scale,so that the measurements will be exact the rolls will be in similar size.

Once each of the dough is divided into 10 equal parts, roll and shape them into small balls.Just tuck-in the edges towards the center and then roll the seamside on a surface to make is a smooth round ball.

Let the rolls sit for 8-10 minutes. This is not for proofing the dough; but this will help the dough to rest and relax, so that elasticity of the dough will be reduced and thus the dough will not rebound back when we roll the dough.

Don’t forget to cover the rolls to prevent any chance of them getting dried.

Roll out the white dough ball into a circle and place the chocolate ball inside it and then wrap the chocolate ball with the white dough.Roll and shape into smooth round balls.

3.SHAPE THE ROLLS

Take each dough ball and roll it into an oval shape. The dough should have to have at least 1 cm thickness.

Now flip over and fold the dough into half.

Cut the dough from the bended end, leaving about 1 cm uncut from the other end.Open out and shape into a heart shape.

4.PROOF THE SHAPED HEART DINNER ROLLS

Place the shaped heart dinner rolls on a parchment lined baking sheet. And cover them up loosely with a greased plastic film..so that we can make sure they will not get dry and at the same time, the covering will not disturb the smooth rising.

Let them proof for 60-70 minutes or until they are puffed up beautifully. The time will vary according to the warmth of our room.

The warmer the environment, the faster the proofing will be.

5.BAKE THE HEART ROLLS

After 70 minutes of proofing the rolls have puffed up nicely.Dust the top of the rolls with some flour, if you want to get light colored rolls.Or if you want to get tiny golden colored heart rolls ,just brush the top with some egg wash.

And now they are ready to go into the oven.

So bake at 350 F for 18-22 minutes or until they slightly start to turn golden in color.

Can I double the recipe?

Yes you can double the recipe.

How long can I keep the bread at room temperature?

You can keep the heart rolls at room temperature in an air tight container for upto three days

The rolls will become dry and not be as soft as they were just baked. But we can make them soft and fluffy just by reheating the rolls.

How to reheat the left over rolls?

  • Preheat the oven to 350 °F (177 °C). This is the best temperature for reheating bread. Any hotter and the bread could burn quickly. A lower temperature would require a longer cooking time, resulting in dry bread. If you want a soft interior with a chewy crust, 350℉ (175℃) is the way to go.
  • Spray some water on the bread or cover the bread with an aluminum foil (so that the bread will not get dry when baked)
  • Place you bread inside the preheated oven and bake for about 8-10 minutes. You will get bread as it is freshly baked.
  • If you want to make your bread moist, warm and chewy, then you can steam the bread.

Can I freeze this heart dinner rolls ?

Yes you can freeze this rolls.Simply wrap the bread in plastic or aluminum foil to protect it from freezer burn and keep frozen for up to one month.

Take it out whenever you need and just put it in 350 F preheated oven for 10 minutes, and you’ll get fresh bread ready to eat.

Why the crust of my heart dinner rolls is too thick ?

  • Kneading problems. When finished kneading, dough should be ‘tacky’, not dry.
  • Oven temperature too low.Which leads to longer baking time which can result in thick crust.
  • Bread overbaked.
